Although the GSA was mainly a political union when it had first been founded, the organization had to centralize other sectors under its control in order to safeguard its citizens. Besides military matters, financial and scientific management had already been established back on Earth. However, the dark turn of events, pitted the GSA against a host of new tasks. The coordination of rebuilding an entire civilization, maintaining human employment while robotics took over most physical labor, governance over outward colonies. The highly centralized GSA became the necessity to ensure mankind’s survival.
After emerging into a new solar system, mankind desperately needed a new planet to call home. A suitable planet, later named Terra Nova, was the prime target. Although plentiful in natural resources, the planet lacked the raw materials needed to rebuild humanity. This is where Yarin came in. Yarin, a red planet devoid of atmosphere and life, was a cold reminder of what had been lost to the encroaching Hive.
However, it didn’t take long for the red planet’s surface to become littered with industrial plants and mining colonies. For two decades Molochite was mined primarily from this planet. Meanwhile, small moons and asteroids began to be exploited as humanity’s thirst for resources rapidly expanded. As their activity increased, discoveries of alien fossils rose to prominence. Exposure to these artifacts led to strange behavior among the miners, which came to be known as the "miner’s disease". Quick to act out of past fears, the GSA ordered entire mining outposts to be quarantined and razed to the ground, although this was always kept from the public.
It wasn't long before findings of a more morbid and hidden past reared its ugly head. Yarin, it turned out, had been a life baring planet only a few million years ago, and its native species wiped clean by the same fate that casted the human race to the brink of extinction. The Hive had been here before. As more of Yarin’s population became ill with the miner’s disease, extensive studies where carried out. The cause was found to be spores coming from Hive fossils, buried deep below the planet surface. Civilian traffic from and to the planet was immediately cut off and most mining operations were halted.
Massive military campaigns swept over the planet surface. What first seemed as a local threat soon changed into a planet wide pandemic. Now no longer merely a simple mining planet, Yarin became an open theatre to war. Humanity once again found itself fighting the horrific Hive. This time however, the outbreak appeared to be somewhat contained and the GSA focused all efforts to keep it confined to the red planet.
Yarin must not fall.
