After the Third World War had ended, the GSA rose to power on political fronts. Acquiring large stakes in corporate businesses, army, research and development, energy markets, politics and most of all space programs, the GSA was a heavy hitter with a lot of influence. Their ambition helped in rebuilding the damage wrought by the new Great War.
All these assets were united under a single banner and creed: "To move humanity forward into a new dawn for the world. A world where hunger, war and famine were things of the past and science, coalition and cooperation would pave the way towards a brighter future for humankind." With a seemingly unending financial structure, the GSA created the moon station "Project Eclipse". With this grand undertaking the GSA showed humanity they could work together in order to create the impossible.
Some groups still seemed skeptical however, claiming that one organization alone shouldn't hold so much power. Many spoke out and rebelled against the GSA. Be it in political debates, protests or open acts of violence. These groups claimed that the GSA kept a hidden agenda and were busy orchestrating a global society where democracy and free choice would parish and the GSA would hold supremacy.
While these protesting groups gained more and more foothold, the GSA feared that it wouldn't be long before an open act of terrorism would soon follow.
And they were right.
On a February morning a group of unidentified ships left from Earth's orbit and assaulted Eclipse, killing hundreds of innocent civilians, workers and GSA Soldiers in the process. Soon after this attack an inter-planet broadcast followed, proving that the GSA indeed did hold back information concerning a giant space station orbiting Neptune. "Seen the size and scope of the project it would have cost billions of taxpayers' money. What purpose is there in keeping this a secret? A logical explanation would be that it’s a weapon in order to force everyone into submission."
That same hour the GSA held a wide spread press conference concerning these accusations and deflected any subsequent questions asked. This conference stated that Parhelion was a myth, a rumor spread by the terrorists that were responsible for the earlier Eclipse attack. A second statement was added in which the GSA promised amnesty to any insurgent that would turn themselves in.
No further public investigations were held after that day concerning the truth behind project Parhelion.
A few years later the truth dawned. Earth was attacked, barraged by extraterrestrial splintered spires. This cataclysmic event caused the deaths of billion's living on Earth and introduced the Hive's infection to millions of other survivors. The GSA used as many resources as they could muster in an effort to evacuate, while others tried their luck by their own devices to seize commercial space flights and space haulers to get away from Earth. Destination, the Moon or Mars colonies.
Amidst the chaos, infection spread to the colonies through unsecured flights taking thousands of refugees from Earth to Mars or the Moon. The GSA tried to secure the outbreak, but eventually stood powerless. This caused the GSA to take more drastic measures, setting up blockades around the colonies, holding back lifeboats and shooting down entire fleets of potentially infected refugee crafts trying to make port. After several weeks it became clear that these actions were fruitless. The infection had reached their destination. Losing ground, as well as space, the GSA was at an impasse. With nowhere to go, the GSA made their desperate decision. It was time to unveil their 'well hidden' secret.
Out of fear for infection, the GSA first sent out to pick up military and scientific personnel to operate the giant space station, which at the time had nothing more than a skeleton crew. With the station starting to become more operable, civilians were picked up. Each new candidate for Parhelion was thoroughly screened and checked for traces of the infection before boarding the ships that would take them off-planet. They left behind their families, friends, parents and children, on the promise of a safe haven on Parhelion. Those who were left behind were taken by the plague.
Once aboard the gigantic frigates that would carry them all the way to Neptune, the passengers were put into a comatose state. While in this state, the passengers were artificially kept alive through catheters providing everyone their basic needs. The trade-off for this basically one-sided deal was that the passengers were all entitled to 11 months of comatose sleep. This meant that one month out of the 12 month journey, everyone had to pull their weight in various tasks like, among others, electronic maintenance or ensuring the wellbeing of others.
After a few months the steady stream of refugee ships waiting to dock on Parhelion stopped, this was it. All that was left of humanity, once boasting over 15 billion, was reduced to roughly 900 million. Immediately the GSA explained what project Parhelion truly was and why the secrecy was needed for all this time. It wasn't just a simple space station, Parhelion held the key to the survival of humanity. This was being kept a secret in order to ensure Parhelion wouldn’t become the target of insurgent opposition, which ironically was the reason the project had almost been compromised.
The enormous investments the GSA had put into scientific endeavors shortly after the Great War had led to major breakthroughs in quantum physics. This proved to be a much needed boost for the development of humanity in general and specifically for computing and communication technology. Following entanglement theories, tests with sending small probes through black holes resulted in positive information feedback. Building on this success, further experiments increased in scale.
Ultimately, project Parhelion proved capable of pushing objects through a black hole by launching them with blazing speed. The only danger was that once something had gone through, there would be no return.
And so humanity prepared for the last exodus of humankind. The journey through Parhelion.
